I’ve been riding now for about 12 years and love being in this area where the roads give us some of the most stunning scenery in the UK in my opinion.
My journey towards advanced riding started a few years ago where I did my first test in Nottingham as there was no RoSPA group in the area at the time. This resulted in my first Silver pass.
I then found this group and had another attempt which resulted in another Silver…….The challenge for 2026 is to achieve a Gold pass and work towards becoming a tutor in the group.

Mark Robinson
Advanced Tutor
I’m old enough to be part of the generation influenced by Barry Sheene and Evel Kinevel but also remember how nervous I was when I first rode a FS1E for the very first time back in the late 70’s.
Learning was vital for me then, and is equally important now, being able to pass on advice and experience from the perspective of Advanced Tutor with Grampian Advanced Motorcyclists.
Having gained my first RoSPA Gold in 1997, I’ve added a few more since, and qualifications of Group Tutor and Advanced Tutor followed.
Still passionate about motorcycles after 40+ years and riding for pleasure or tuition whenever possible.

Having ridden motorcycles on and off for around 50 years, it took me almost half that time to realise how much more enjoyable riding could be with better skills. I wish I’d discovered that sooner.
My learning journey began with a BikeSafe/Rider Refinement course, where I learned a great deal in just two days. I then joined IAM, eventually becoming a National Observer with Tayside IAM.
More recently, I joined RoSPA GAM and am now working towards my test, with the aim of becoming a tutor. I’m at my happiest on two wheels, especially when helping other riders improve their skills and enjoy their motorcycling even more.

Paul Lake
Treasurer
I began my motorcycling journey in 2002, completing a five-day direct access course with the initial aim of improving my daily commute. What started as practicality quickly developed into a passion for advanced riding.
I achieved my IAM advanced motorcycle qualification in 2015, followed by an advanced car test pass with a first in 2018, and a RoSPA Gold on the bike in 2019. I have also served on the committee of my local advanced riding group.
After relocating to Moray, I joined the local club to regain my RoSPA Gold and work towards becoming a tutor.

Tim Dixon
Committee Member
I’ve been riding since the late 70s from my first FS1E moped to 1100cc superbikes with plenty in between, both two and four strokes. I visited the Isle of Man TT in the early 70s and that was it. I’ve followed road racing for decades, attending many GPs, Manx and Irish road races, watching many of the greats.
I took a ten-year break after a major “off” and joined the RoSPA Grampian group in 2023 to get my confidence back, enjoy riding again and to do so safely.
I thought I knew how to ride but I’ve learned so much and am now enjoying my riding more than ever. I want to continue to learn, improve on my bronze and hopefully help other riders in the future.
